FO: Grainline Scout woven tee

I present my Scout woven tee - ah, how I love it!
Grainline - scout woven tee
(Forgive the not-great photos in this post. This was a five-minutes-before-running-out-the-door photoshoot!)

This is a great basic pattern: no darts, no closures. I was a little worried that the lack of darts would result in a shapeless pillowcase of a top, but instead it fits really well around the shoulders, arms and neckline, and drapes beautifully. I didn't have any fitting problems around the shoulders or back  - my usual "problem" areas (hooray!). The only adjustments I made were:
  • length - I added 1.5" at the lengthen line, and 0.5" at the hem.
  • sizing - merged from size 0 at the bust to a 2 at the hips.

If anything it's the tiniest bit snug at the bust, but the 2 was too roomy.

I used 1m of Liberty lawn, and had some left over for my one-day-I'll-get-around-to-making-it Liberty scrap quilt (but I was pretty inventive with the layout). The print is called Sleeping Rose (C):
Pretty, no? It's lots of light honey-coloured roses laid out in rows. I'm by no means a neat freak, but the order and slightly hypnotic symmetry of this pattern really appeals to me. Plus roses - yay!

The sums:
1m Liberty lawn - £12 (from Fabrics Galore)
Scout woven tee pattern - £2.89 ($4.50 when I bought it - it's now $6.50)
Thread from stash

Total: £14.89

I see more of these in my future. I'd like one with 3/4 length sleeves. And maybe one with a collar.

But up next, a skirt. I really really like the look of Grainline's new Moss mini skirt. But I've got some serious skirt-thinking to do - I've got plenty of patterns, so I should'nt really buy another yet.

Speak soon!

  1. Very pretty! I've had mixed feelings about this pattern and whether or not it would work for me, but I might be convinced now!

  3. Oh, this looks so great. I've had the pattern for a while but have shied away from making it thinking it would be a bit shapeless but it looks so lovely on you that I may just have to try it.

  4. This is lovely! The colours and drape of the fabric are gorgeous and it's got such a nice shape to it. I'm currently working on my first tiny-pocket tank but the scout woven tee might actually have been more practical for this time of year!

    1. thanks Kathryn - yes, I've got the tiny pocket tank on my radar too! I think it will make a great layering piece under cardies in the autumn, and over long-sleeved tees when it gets even cooler?

  5. So often its the simplest things that work best and get worn the most often - I can imagine this being in the washing basket every week! Lovely! And yes - the Moss skirt! Do it!

  8. This is such a fantastic fit and looks great with jeans! I too had thought the lack of darts may not make this the best fitted top but this looks fantastic. Love it!

  9. Such a great basic to add to your wardrobe. I cannot wait to try out that pattern. I just need to tape it together. I have so much on my list of things I want to make! Ugh!

So I totally cut into some Liberty fabric and COMPLETELY understand your love for it. Working with it truly is a dream.

    1. Fortunately, there aren't too many bits of paper to this pattern!

Oh, you'll never turn back now - Liberty sort of ruins everything else! ;) x

  11. It looks great and very pretty fabric. I have made two of these tops already but need to make the shoulders wider and use a more drapey fabric. I also lengthened my second version too. once I have the fit right I should make one with Liberty. :)

  12. I love this, great fabric choice as always! Totally agree that it's a great pattern, straight-forward but feels stylish, I'm on my 2nd. When you tuck it in, are you wearing it with high-waisted items? Because my second version feels like it has too much fabric to do this.
